Promote a shift towards zero-carbon stores in the food retail sector.

The entire food industry from field to retail to waste, is responsible for 30% of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Up to 2% of those global GHG emissions stem from the food retail industry alone. Food retail stores have an up to 50% higher energy usage than other commercial buildings.

Where to improve

Refrigeration & Refrigerants 

With 30-50% of total energy use in a store refrigeration is the largest contributor to the food retail’s overall environmental impact. Commercial refrigeration is responsible for approximately 1/3 of the demand for Hydrofluorocarbons in the EU. High-Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants are responsible for 18-30% of the overall carbon emissions in EU stores. Natural refrigerants are an environmentally friendly alternative.

Energy Efficiency

Energy consumption for the food retail store overall and for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems are key factors for improvement. This includes avoidance of heat load, use of waste heat, use of renewable energies and an integrated energy management.
